What Fits a Jeep Wrangler: Roof Racks, Cargo Carriers and Kayak Mounts
Every other vehicle on this site has a fixed roof. The Wrangler's comes off — which is exactly why so much rack advice written for crossovers gets it wrong here.

A Wrangler's roof is not structural in the way a crossover's is. On a hardtop, you are loading a removable fiberglass or composite panel that is bolted on; on a soft top, there is effectively nothing up there to load at all.
That is why Wrangler rack systems look so different from everything else on this site. The good ones do not clamp to the top — they bolt to the body, the windshield frame or the sports bar, and carry the load into the vehicle's structure rather than into a panel you can unbolt in ten minutes.
It is also why the hitch is the strong answer on a Wrangler far more often than on a crossover. A Wrangler has a real receiver, a flat-ish rear end, and an owner who probably removes the top in summer anyway.

Sources disagree. The JL manual figure is quoted as 100 lb, while 150 lb (70 kg) is widely cited for Wranglers fitted with a rack that carries load into the body structure rather than the top panel. We could not reconcile the two against a single Jeep document, so treat 100 lb as the conservative number for a top-mounted load and check your own manual.

Wrangler cautions
- The rear spare tire sits proud of the tailgate, which pushes a hitch carrier further back than on other vehicles and makes a folding shank more valuable.
- If you remove the top in summer, anything mounted to it comes off with it. Plan for that before you buy.
- Swing-out tire carriers and rear-mounted accessories can foul a hitch carrier's swing path — check clearance with the tailgate fully open.
