Roof Rack and Cargo Carrier FAQ

Almost always yes. Roof rails run front to back along the edges of the roof; every carrier mounts to bars running side to side. The only exception is the integrated type that stow inside the rails and swing across.

Put your hand under the rail. If you can fit a finger between the rail and the roof, they are raised. If the rail sits flat against the roof with no gap, they are flush. They need different, non-interchangeable feet.

Yes, and without drilling. A clamp-on foot pack hooks into the lip inside the door aperture using a rubber pad shaped to your specific car. That pad, the fit kit, is what makes it safe and it is vehicle-specific.

Most vehicles publish a dynamic limit between 100 and 176 lb, and it includes the crossbars and the carrier as well as your cargo. Check your owner's manual under cargo and luggage, or your vehicle's page in our fit guides.

Dynamic is the limit while driving; static is the limit while parked. Static is often three or four times higher because a parked car applies no cornering, shock or aerodynamic loads. Use the dynamic figure for anything you drive with.

Class III with a 2-inch receiver for most hitch cargo carriers. The number that governs is tongue weight, not towing capacity, and the carrier's own weight comes off it before your cargo.

No. Mainstream platform racks rate 60 lb per bike, which is under many full-power e-bikes, and trunk racks are not rated for e-bike weight at all. Check the rack's per-bike rating and your hitch's tongue weight rating.

Yes. Hull straps resist lifting and sliding but not rotation, and a long boat generates real lift at the bow at highway speed. The end lines are also your redundancy if a cam buckle slips.

Consumer Reports measured a 19% loss on a sedan with a rack and rooftop carrier fitted, and 13% on an SUV. An empty rack alone cost almost 11% on the sedan. Expect double-digit percentage losses at highway speed.

Square and round bars are; aero bars much less so. Most whistling comes from an empty channel acting as a resonating cavity or a flat strap fluttering. A wind fairing is the single biggest improvement available.

Thule's brochure gives a recommended maximum of 85 mph. Yakima does not publish a figure, saying their products are safe up to posted speed limits under normal conditions. Since US posted limits are below 85 mph, the speed limit is your limit.

Through a touchless wash, usually yes, subject to the height limit. Through a brush or cloth wash, no — the moving equipment can catch a bar end or a foot. With a cargo box fitted, wash by hand.

Not by themselves. Grit trapped between a rubber pad and the paint does, as does over-tightening, and as does leaving a rack fitted in wet conditions for months. All three are habits rather than product faults.
