The bar everything else gets compared to — and the one whose real price only becomes clear once you add up the three parts you actually need.

The WingBar Evo is the default recommendation in most roof rack conversations, and the reasons are straightforward: it is the quietest mainstream bar, it carries the highest published load rating of the mainstream bars, and Thule has a fit kit for almost anything with four wheels.

We have not fitted one. This is an assessment of published specifications, the mounting system and the accessory interface — plus the thing product listings never tell you, which is what the complete system costs.

What you actually need to buy

The WingBar Evo is bars. On its own it does nothing. A working rack is three purchases:

  1. The bars — in the correct fixed length for your vehicle and your widest intended load.
  2. The foot pack — Evo Raised Rail, Evo Flush Rail, Evo Fixpoint or Evo Clamp, depending on your roof type.
  3. The fit kit — vehicle-specific, and required with the Clamp and Fixpoint feet.

Put your car into the Thule fit guide and it will name all three. Do that before pricing anything, because the bar price alone is roughly half the real number.

The alternatives worth weighing

The Yakima JetStream does the same job for less on most mainstream cars, with a lower published load rating you probably cannot use anyway. That is the closest comparison, and we go through it properly in Thule vs Yakima.

The Thule SquareBar Evo uses the same feet and fit kits for substantially less, at the cost of square-bar noise. It is a reasonable way to start if you might upgrade the bars later and keep the feet.

And if the load is heavy rather than bulky, neither is the answer — a hitch carrier costs less, loads at waist height, and takes far less fuel.

Common questions

Is the Thule WingBar Evo worth it?
If the rack lives on the car year-round, yes — the noise difference is what keeps a rack fitted rather than in a garage. For two trips a year it is hard to justify against a soft cargo bag or a hitch carrier.
What else do I need to buy with WingBar Evo bars?
A foot pack matched to your roof type, and for clamp-on and fixed-point roofs, a vehicle-specific fit kit. Three purchases in total. The Thule fit guide will name all three for your car.
Can I cut WingBar Evo bars to length?
No. They are sold in fixed lengths with fitted end caps. Choose the length from the fit guide, sized for the widest load you plan to carry.
