The Best Hitch Bike Racks
If your car has a 2-inch receiver, this is the easiest way to carry bikes ever invented. The hard part is choosing between four racks that are all genuinely good.

A platform hitch rack holds bikes by the wheels, at knee height, behind the car. Nothing touches the frame, nothing goes over your head, and you can put a bike on in about fifteen seconds once you have done it twice. It is the best answer to carrying bikes by a distance.
The constraint is the receiver. Nearly every rack here needs a 2-inch opening; several are also sold in a 1-1/4 inch version with a lower capacity. Measure your receiver opening before you shop, because it eliminates more options than your budget does.
After that, three things separate them: weight rating per bike (which decides whether electric bikes are on the table), tire and wheelbase range (which decides whether a fat bike or a kid’s bike fits without adapters), and loading ease — how hard it is to lift a bike into it and how far the rack tilts to get at the trunk.

Check your receiver first
A 1-1/4 inch receiver and a 2-inch receiver are not interchangeable, and this is what eliminates most options. Measure the square opening.
If it is 2 inches, everything on this page is available to you. If it is 1-1/4 inches, you are limited to the racks sold in a 1-1/4 inch version — usually with a lower per-bike rating and a two-bike maximum. If you have no receiver at all, read the best bike racks without a hitch instead.
An adapter sleeve that fits a 2-inch rack into a 1-1/4 inch receiver exists. It does not raise the hitch’s rating, it adds leverage and wobble, and most rack manufacturers advise against it. We would not use one.
Per-bike weight rating, and why it matters more now
Ten years ago nobody checked this, because a bike was 25-30 lb and every rack handled it. Electric bikes changed that: a full-power e-MTB can be 60-70 lb, and two of them is a different class of load.
The mainstream platform racks rate 60 lb per bike; the Yakima StageTwo rates 70. Racks built specifically for e-bikes go higher still and usually offer a ramp — see our e-bike picks.
Do the arithmetic against your hitch too. Two 60 lb bikes plus a 52 lb rack is over 170 lb of tongue weight before anything else, and that is past what some Class II hitches are rated for. Our hitch classes guide has the numbers.
Tilt, tailgates and the thing you will do every day
Every rack here tilts down so you can open the back of the car. How far it tilts, and whether it tilts with bikes loaded, is the difference between a rack you like and a rack you resent.
Check two things against your vehicle. Does the rack tilt far enough to clear your hatch when it opens? And can you release the tilt with one hand while holding the hatch with the other? On a tall SUV hatch, rack-plus-hatch clearance is tighter than it looks.
Security, honestly
Every rack here locks the bikes to the rack and the rack to the car. Those locks are deterrents. A cable lock through a wheel and a frame defeats an opportunist and nothing more.
Practical version: fine for a lunch stop, not fine for an overnight in a hotel car park. Bring the bikes in, or bring a real lock and use the rack locks as the second layer.
